He received career ending injuries to his spinal cord and vertebrae and is paralyzed below the neck.

Murray was a seven-time expert British champion and six-time UK National champion before the age of 16. During his professional BMX career, Murray was known for his double back flips, 360 back flips, and turndown back flips. He was nominated for ESPN 'BMX rider of the year'. He now has a charity “Stay Strong” that fans and sponsors have helped Stephen set up the charity, to help him with his doings and any people that have these sort of problems from falling of their Bmx bikes attempting tricks like this and ending up with the horrific consequences. There motto’s are “NO MATTER YOUR FIGHT... STAY STRONG "TM"” and “Stay Strong, Not Just A Saying, But A Way Of Life.”Stephen goes to physio therapy 3 times a week at Next Step Fitness in Redondo Beach, Calif.  He continues to gain strength in his entire body. Stephen is now able to move his right forearm from his chair & off the arm rest. He feels sensation throughout his body and has slight movement in his toes. It’s absolutely amazing to watch him focuses on the movement when he moves his arm or wrist. To help with the “Stay Strong” charity you can buy everything from wrist bands to bike part to raise money to help Stephen and other people in these situations recover.
